Hon. Cynthia Valenzuela is a state bar court trial judge appointed in 2016 by the California Supreme Court. She earned her J.D. from the UCLA School of Law. She was a judicial extern to the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Having committed her legal career to public service, Judge Valenzuela served in the United States Department of Justice for over eight years as both a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C., and as a federal prosecutor in the Criminal Division in Los Angeles prosecuting violent crimes, complex fraud, and public corruption cases at trial and on appeal. Judge Valenzuela was the National Litigation Director for MALDEF for over five years, and then served as a supervising attorney in the legal office of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She was appointed as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in the administration of President Clinton. Judge Valenzuela has received numerous awards and recognition from the U.S. Department of Justice, federal law enforcement agencies, bar organizations, community groups, and top lawyer lists including the Daily Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” and “Top 75 Women Litigators.” She is a member of the National Association of Women Judges, the National Council of Lawyer Disciplinary Boards, and the American Bar Association, National Conference of State Trial Judges.
